Future Firefighters? GAD Youth Explore Careers with Fire & Rescue!
At GAD Youth Center, we believe that every young person deserves the opportunity to explore their passions, discover their strengths, and visualize a future filled with purpose. That’s exactly what our Career Assessment program is designed to do—help youth navigate their potential and connect it to real-world experiences.
Recently, during one of our pilot Career Assessment workshops, some teens expressed a strong interest in pursuing careers as firefighters. We saw this as more than just curiosity—it was a spark of inspiration. So, we took action.
A Field Trip to Remember: Fire Station No. 5
In collaboration with Spotsylvania’s Fire, Rescue, & Emergency Management, GAD organized a field trip to Fire Station No. 5. The incredible A Shift Crew welcomed our group with open arms and gave both teens and adults an unforgettable look into life as a firefighter.
The visit began with a guided station and apparatus tour, where the youth explored fire trucks, rescue tools, and learned about the daily operations of first responders. But the real excitement came with the hands-on experiences:
Participating in a simulated search and rescue exercise
Practicing with a water can extinguisher
Trying on real turnout gear, helmets, and gloves
The energy was contagious—smiles, excitement, and maybe even a few career dreams sparked into reality.
Why It Matters
This trip wasn’t just fun (although it definitely was!); it was transformational. When youth step into environments that match their interests, they begin to see what’s possible. The fire station became more than a place—it became a vision of their future.
At GAD, these types of experiences are what our Career Assessment program is all about. Youth start by completing career aptitude assessments to discover their strengths and areas of interest. In Phase 2, we work hard to connect those interests with real-world job shadowing opportunities like this one.
